12 tips for youth swimmers moving to the senior level

Following are tips for youth swimmers who are moving on to the senior level. Coaches can put them on a board so that these tips are visible all the time by the young swimmers. 





  1. Choose the program and coach that are right for you. Consider all options and respect your talent. Be happy in your choice and your environment.
  2. Do not seek easy options, exceptions to team guidelines and protocols, or compromise.
  3. Be prepared to commit to a team approach and unconditionally support the team objectives.
  4. Develop the identified weakness of the team so that they become your personal strengths. Be the most skilled swimmer in any pool at any time.
  5. Commit to a healthy lifestyle outside of the pool. Love your family and be happy. Make the environment work for you, not against you.
  6. Pursue and develop personal leadership skills. Do not be distracted, and control your emotions.
  7. Increase your percentage of race speed and race pace while not ignoring other training zones and energy systems. Improve your recevery technique.
  8. Pursue repeatableexcellence in all that you do.
  9. Be punctual and work on skill refinement outside of normal training hours.
  10. Be superior in every possible way and respect your teammates and opposition.
  11. Improve or eliminate your weaknesses and maintain your strengths.
  12. Be accountable and responsible. Give and receive trust and respect it. Know your job. Competition is just another day at the office.
